Spain mobilizes its friends and allies to stop YPF’s nationalization
Madrid seeks the support of the US, EU, G-20 and Latin American countries against Buenos Aires

The Rajoy government threatens reprisals

The Spanish government raised the tone of its confrontation with Cristina Fernandez over the threat of imminent nationalization of Repsol's share in Argentina's oil firm YPF.

If on Thursday Industry Minister Jose Manuel Soria said that the “hostile moves (against the Spanish company), would bring consequences,” on Friday, his colleague, Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo, went further.

“Whatever the aggression, violating the principal of legal certainty of Repsol would be considered an act of aggression against the Spanish government and it would take appropriate measures and ask for support from its friends and allies," the minister said after meeting with the Argentine ambassador in Spain, Carlo Antonio Bettini, who was summoned to the ministry to communicate the concern of Spanish officials and to request clarifications about the plans of his country regarding the Spanish oil firm.
